This project was born in 2008, when the British Academy generously agreed to sponsor a three-year research partnership between staff and postgraduate students at the Universities of Portsmouth, Dakar, Algiers and the Ecole normale superieure (ENS) in Algiers. The project investigates the role of tirailleurs senegalais (sub-Saharan African troops in the French army) during the Algerian War of Independence 1954-62. It has two main aims. Firstly, to discover aspects of this little known history through research conducted by postgraduate students in all three countries; and secondly, to develop a collaborative methodology for conducting oral history in African contexts, published online and accessible to all in French, English and Arabic.This is a work in progress…
